Martin Tranmæl

Martin Olsen Tranmæl (born June 27, 1879 in Melhus , Sør-Trøndelag , † July 1, 1967 ) was a leader of the Norwegian labor movement.

Before the First World War, Tranmæl worked in the USA for six years, where he made contact with the Industrial Workers of the World . After his return he became involved in the Norwegian Labor Party ( NAP ; also DNA ) and became the leader of its left wing. As party secretary in 1919, he advocated joining the Comintern . After a conflict with Grigory Zinoviev , however, he organized the withdrawal from the International in 1923. The party turned back to social democracy in the years that followed .

Tranmæl belonged to the Storting from 1925 to 1927 and was a member of the Norwegian Nobel Committee from 1938 to 1963 .

In the 1930s Tranmæl supported the young German exile Herbert Frahm and had him published in the party press under the pseudonym Willy Brandt .

Martin Tranmæl was buried on Vår Frelsers Gravlund in Oslo .
