Martin Wölfel

Martin Wölfel (born August 29, 1969 in Potsdam ) is a German opera and concert singer ( countertenor ).

Life

The countertenor Martin Wölfel studied - after he originally wanted to become an actor and had already received admission to the "Ernst Busch" Academy of Dramatic Arts - singing at the Dresden Music Academy . He finished his studies as a master class student with Margret Trappe-Wiel. He performs regularly as a concert and opera singer and has been a professor of singing at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen since 2017 .

As an opera singer Wölfel made his debut in 1997 in the role of Nearco in the baroque opera buffa Calandro by Giovanni Alberto Ristori . Naturally, his operatic repertoire focuses on works from the Baroque period as well as from the 20th and 21st centuries. So he appeared u. a. as Claire in the German premiere of John Lunn's Die Zofen at the Semperoper Dresden, in Philip Glass ' Galileo Galilei (Braunschweig), as Edgar in Aribert Reimann's Lear (Frankfurt, Berlin), as Sorceress in Henry Purcell's Dido and Aeneas (Frankfurt, Edinburgh) ), as a fool in Alban Berg's Wozzeck (Frankfurt, Oslo), as Antonio in André Tchaikowsky's The Merchant of Venice (Cardiff, London), as Oberon in Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream (Mannheim) , as the devil in Detlev Glanert's joke, Satire , Irony and deeper meaning (Mannheim), as Tolomeo in Georg Friedrich Händel's Giulio Cesare (Hamburg, Cologne, Karlsruhe), as Scipione in Tommaso Traetta's Sofonisba (Mannheim), as Artemis in Hans Werner Henze's Phaedra (Berlin) and as Orlofsky and Frosch in Johann Strauss ' Die Fledermaus (Frankfurt).

Martin Wölfel is intensely committed to contemporary operatic works. He created the roles of Helicon in Detlev Glanert's Caligula (Frankfurt, 2006), Countertenor 2 in Bernhard Lang's Theater der Wiederholungen (Graz, 2003), Jim in Ari Benjamin Meyers ' Nico. Sphinx made of ice (Dresden, 2005), and the Servante de la reine in Aribert Reimann's L'invisible (Deutsche Oper Berlin, 2017).

As a concert singer Wölfel u. a. with the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester , the Thomanerchor Leipzig, the LauttenCompagney Berlin and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields worldwide, especially with works by Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Friedrich Handel.

Martin Wölfel has made numerous CD and radio recordings.
