Martin W. Frederiksen

Martin W. Frederiksen (born September 15, 1930 in Kota Pinang , Sumatra , † July 14, 1980 in Oxford ) was a British ancient historian of Australian origin.

life and work

Martin W. Frederiksen, the son of the Australian farmer Sofus Frederiksen, was born in the small town of Kota Pinang on the island of Sumatra (then part of the Dutch East Indies ) and grew up in Canberra . He studied history at the University of Sydney (1947-1952) and after the Bachelor (1952) at Balliol College of University of Oxford , where he was appointed Craven Fellow in 1954 and the Ancient History Prize was awarded in the same year. He then stayed from 1954 to 1956 at the British School at Rome . From 1956 to 1959 he was a PS Allen Junior Research Fellow at Corpus Christi College , Oxford, where he obtained his master's degree in 1958 .

From 1959 Frederiksen was a Fellow of Worcester College and lecturer (University Lecturer) for ancient history at Oxford. He also kept in touch with the British School at Rome: from 1962 to 1966 and from 1972 to 1976 he was visiting professor there, from 1972 to 1977 a member of the library committee and from 1979 until his untimely death chairman of the publications committee. He died in a car accident.

In the course of his many stays in Italy, Frederiksen mainly dealt with the Italian peoples of antiquity. He published numerous reviews and advertisements of publications by others in which he presented his own research. He also wrote an extensive article on the city of Puteoli for Pauly's Real Encyclopedia of Classical Antiquities (RE) and a book on Campania , which was only published in a revised form after his death by Nicholas Purcell (1984). He was also editor of the Journal of Roman Studies from 1969 to 1974 and co-editor of the second edition of Cambridge Ancient History .
