Martin van Bruinessen

Martin van Bruinessen (born July 10, 1946 in Schoonhoven ) is a Dutch sociologist .

He studied physics, mathematics (graduation 1971) and then anthropology and sociology at the University of Utrecht . Between 1974 and 1976 he conducted many field surveys among the Kurds in Iraq , Iran and Turkey . In 1978 he submitted his dissertation Agha, Shaikh and State. On the Social and Political Organization of Kurdistan presented his most important work to date. This soon became a standard work of comparative social research, although it had not appeared in bookshops until the German translation of its revised version in 1989. Van Bruinessen describes the social-religious structures of the Kurds.

In 1977 van Bruinessen began research on Ottoman history at the University of Utrecht . In 1988 the work Evliya Çelebi was published in Diyarbekir . From 1978 to 1981 he traveled very often to Iran, Turkey and Afghanistan . In addition to the Kurds and Turkey, from 1982 onwards he also dealt a lot with Indonesia , where he stayed for six years. There he taught sociology at the University of Yogyakarta .

From 1994 van Bruinessen taught Kurdish and Turkish at the University of Utrecht. From 1996 to 1997 he was visiting professor for Kurdish studies at the Free University of Berlin .
