The Martin Monastery Erfurt (also: monastery Mariengarten ) was 1288-1819 a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Brühl Str 55 in. Erfurt , Thuringia .

history

Within the city wall of Erfurt, the Mariengarten nunnery was founded in 1288 and was populated with nuns from Berka monastery . Between 1303 and 1309 it was moved outside the city wall to the Martinikirche in Brühl (today in Brühlervorstadt ). Since then the monastery has been called Martinskloster .

The four-wing, two-story enclosure building on the west side of the church is built around a square courtyard and, like the church, is of Gothic origin. It was fundamentally rebuilt from 1726 to 1736. The baroque sandstone sculpture of Maria with child in the southeast corner comes from this time .

In 1802/1803 the monastery fell to the Kingdom of Prussia . By cabinet order of King Friedrich Wilhelm III. It was secularized on October 19, 1818 and March 11, 1819, whereby its assets were to be used " for the best of the churches in Erfurtschen and Eichsfeld ." The Cistercian women who had previously lived here had to leave the monastery The former enclosure building as Prussian barracks , which was later called Martinskaserne. It was expanded between 1822 and 1825 by a new building about twice as large in the former monastery garden, which reached as far as the Breitstrom.

After 1918 the monastery building was used for residential purposes and around 2004 it was converted into a residential building. The Martinskaserne was demolished at the same time.
