Martyn Burke (born September 14, 1952 in Toronto ) is a Canadian journalist , writer , screenwriter and director .

Life

Burke became known both as a writer of novels and as a screenwriter and director of documentaries and feature films. He sees himself primarily as a writer ("If there was a heavenly ordinance where a big finger would point to me and someone said 'You can only do one thing', then I would write".)

The novel Laughing War is based on his experiences as a journalist in the Vietnam War . In the film Witness he portrays the last period of the occupation of Afghanistan by the Soviet Union . Idi Amin - My People Love Me is one of the few films in which the dictator Idi Amin participated directly through interviews. Islam VS Islamists is Burke's contribution to the discussion about Islam and Islamic fundamentalism .

His feature film Avenging Angelo was the last film with Anthony Quinn . The documentary Under Fire: Journalists in Combat (2011), which explored the psychological consequences of war reporting and gave voice to war reporters such as Finbarr O'Reilly , Chris Hedges , Jeremy Bowen and Christina Lamb , received a Peabody Award .

He lives with his wife Laura Morton mainly in Santa Monica and temporarily in Toronto.
