Maruyama Masao ( Japanese 丸山 政 男 ; * 1889 in Nagano ; † November 11, 1957 ) was a Japanese lieutenant general of the infantry .

From 1934 to 1936 Maruyama Masao was a military attaché in Great Britain and in the Second Sino-Japanese War he commanded the 4th Regiment of the Imperial Guard , with which he was involved in the incident at the Marco Polo Bridge .

Maruyama went through the officer career and was promoted to major general on July 15, 1938 . At the same time, the High Command of the Imperial Japanese Army gave him command of the 6th Infantry Brigade and, on May 7, 1940, of the 3rd Independent Defense Unit.

After his promotion to Lieutenant General on March 1, 1941, Maruyama Masao took over the 2nd Division on April 10 of the same year . After the outbreak of the Pacific War , the 2nd Division was deployed in the Dutch East Indies . She landed in Java on March 1, 1942 and was able to take the island within the next week.

As a result of the Allied landings on Guadalcanal , the army command moved the 2nd division to the island in September 1942 to recapture the lost and strategically important airfield at Lunga Point . During the Battle of Guadalcanal , the Americans inflicted considerable losses on the troops under Maruyama Masao, so that the remaining survivors of the division had to be evacuated from the island in February 1943.

In 1944, Maruyama Masao retired from active service in the army. He died on November 11, 1957.
