Marvel Land is an arcade game that was released in 1989 by the Japanese game developer Namco . It is also Namco's last arcade game from the 1980s . In 1991 it was also launched as a console game for the Sega Mega Drive (also Sega Genesis). The EU edition of the console version is known as Talmit's Adventure .

Gameplay

The game takes place in Marvel Land of the same name , an amusement park divided into four worlds . The player slips into the role of Prince Paco (EU / US version: Talmit) to save Princess Luxy (EU / US version: Wondra) from the evil King Mole (original version: 魔王 モ ウ ル; Maō Mōru) . The gameplay is similar to Nintendo's Super Mario Bros. , the gameplay is shown in two dimensions in a lateral cross-section. The player is faced with a wide range of different opponents. Most of the fantasy-like beings can be turned off by jumping upside down. Collectable power-ups such as dragon wings or the ability to create clones make it easier to overcome opponents or to increase your own high score per world.

The four main worlds of the game have the same structure: they each contain seven individual levels in which various obstacles - adapted to the respective world - have to be overcome. Most of the levels are located outside (there is also a roller coaster ride in the amusement park per world). Only the final levels of a main world take place indoors. After they have been completed, the player then meets the respective bosses of the corresponding main world. At the end of the regular levels, the character jumps through a target to increase his own high score. The remaining time, shown in the form of clocks at the bottom of the screen, is added as an extra score.

The battles against the bosses of the main worlds take place largely non-violently and in the form of mini-games. For example, in the first main world you play Scherer, Stein, Papier , in the third main world you have to find a picture that fits the displayed template more quickly within a cluster (EU / US version). After each boss fight, the player frees a trapped fairy who also hands him a "Trident Crystal". The crystals are important aids in the later fight against King Mole. In additional bonus levels, the player can catch stars falling from the sky for extra points. The bonus levels are structured in the form of a nightly parade, the parade floats represent characters from earlier Namco productions, for example from Pac-Man (1980), Dig Dug (1982), Xevious (1982), Mappy (1983), Baraduke (1985) , Valkyrie no BOKEN (NES, 1986), Dragon Spirit (1987) or Beraboh Man (1988).

As with Super Mario Bros. , Marvel Land also offers the option of using warp points to skip levels or even worlds. However, this can make the final battle against King Mole more difficult, as not all Trident Crystals are available to the player to help. A special feature of the arcade version is that the player - after the last final battle - gets all of his previously acquired lives credited as points. In the last levels (unofficially main world five) he has to flee from the collapsing castle with Princess Luxy. Since he only has one life left, the player has only one chance to complete the game. This makes Marvel Land one of Namco's hardest games to complete.
