Mappy ( JapaneseマッピーMAPPI ) is a 1983 by Namco developed and Midway Games marketed arcade game . The game is a side-scroller with cartoon-like characters. The player takes control of Mappy, a mouse in police uniform. The name "Mappy" is probably based on the Japanese term mappo , a derogatory term for a police officer .

Gameplay

The player moves Mappy with a joystick to the left and right through the scene of the game, the villa. There is also a button that Mappy can use to open and close doors. The aim of the game is to get back various stolen items. The player has to avoid the cat thieves ( Mewkies or Meowkys in the US version ) and the boss cat ( Nyamco or Goro in the US version). The degree of difficulty increases with each completed level as the number and speed of the opponents increase.

Objects

There is a set number of points for each item collected:

  • Radio (100 points)
  • TV (200 points)
  • Computer (300 points)
  • Painting (400 points)
  • Safe (500 points)

The points are also multiplied by a multiplier if the items are successfully collected in pairs. The more pairs the player collects, the higher the multiplier, starting from 100 + 100 * 2 for two radios up to a maximum of 500 + 500 * 6 for two safes. The second item in a pair is highlighted by blinking. In total, a maximum of 8500 points can be achieved in this way per round. A level is completed as soon as all items have been collected.

From time to time Goro hides behind one of the objects. If the player collects one, he receives 1000 points in addition to the points.

opponent

During the game, Mappy encounters three types of opponents. With a few exceptions, the player loses a life as soon as he touches an opponent.

Meowkys are pink cats and the opponents Mappy comes across most often. They chase the player and get faster and more numerous with each level. If Mappy touches a Meowky on the ground, he will lose a life.

Goro is a red tomcat who looks like a devil . However, Goro does not follow Mappy directly, but goes his own way. If Mappy touches him on the ground, he will lose a life.

The Gosenzo coin appears when the player takes too much time in a level. First the word Hurry! across the screen , the tempo of the music increases and additional Meowkys appear, which are also faster. If the player is still unable to complete the level, the Gosenzo coin, a blue circle with Goro's face on it, appears and pursues Mappy. If he touches it, whether on the ground or in the air, he loses a life.

Interactions

Mappy and his opponents move not just by running, but also by jumping on trampolines . Mappy cannot be injured while jumping. After four touches, the trampoline breaks and the player loses a life if there is no other trampoline underneath. Its color changes after each touch as follows:

  • Green (neutral)
  • Blue (one jump)
  • Yellow (two jumps)
  • Red (three jumps)

If Mappy touches solid ground, the trampoline is reset to green. For each jump the player receives 10 points.

Another elementary play element in Mappy are doors, which come in three variants:

Ordinary doors can be opened and closed to make it difficult for cats to move forward. If enemies are nearby when Mappy opens a door, they are momentarily stunned and meanwhile pose no threat to Mappy.

Microwave doors can only be used once and when activated they shoot a beam in a certain direction. The Meowkys captured by this are transported out of the play area, but reappear after a short time. For the first two opponents there are 200 points each, for each further 400 points. If Goro is hit, he counts as a normal opponent and the total number of points is additionally multiplied by a factor of 2.

Rainbow doors appear from level 12. These are trap doors that Mappy activates when walking over them. Subsequent enemies fall through the gap and are stunned for a short time. If the player falls through, he loses a life.

Further interaction options:

  • From level 4, Mappy can enter the mansion's attic .
  • From level 8 bells appear in the towers of the villa, with the help of which the player can stun the opponent.

Bonus level

The third level and every fourth level thereafter are bonus levels in which there are no opponents. The aim of this level is to punch all the balloons before the music ends. Each balloon touched corresponds to 200 points, the balloon with Goro's face on it corresponds to 2000 points. If all 15 balloons and the Goro balloon are pierced, the player also receives a Perfect Round Bonus of 5000 points. In total, a maximum of 10,000 points can be achieved per bonus round.

Playing

Like Pac-Man and other arcade games, Mappy has a total of 256 levels. The later levels only differ from the earlier ones in that they are more difficult. If the player successfully masters all levels, the game starts again from the first round.
