Marvin E. Gettleman

Marvin E. Gettleman (born September 12, 1933 in New York City , † January 7, 2017 ) was an American historian .

Life

His parents were Arthur A. Gettleman and Pauline Antipol. In 1957 he graduated from the City College of New York . In 1972 he received his PhD from Johns Hopkins University .

Gettleman taught history at New York University's Tandon School of Engineering from 1959 to 2005 . He then became a professor emeritus of history. He also became visiting professor at Queens College, City University of New York through 2005 and at New York University in 2005. In the 1980s, Gettleman worked with the New York Faculty Committee on Non-Interference in Central America and the Caribbean. From 1996 Gettleman became executive director of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives through 1998 . In 2003, Gettleman helped found it and was a member of the Steering Committee of the Historians Against the War .

He married Susan Braiman and then Ellen Schrecker. He died of complications from dementia in New York City on January 7, 2017, at the age of 83.
