Mary Emily Eaton (* 1873 in Coleford , Gloucestershire , † 1961 in Somerset ) was a British plant painter.

Live and act

Mary Emily Eaton studied art at the Taunton School of Art in Somerset and the Royal College of Art in London . For some time she then worked for the Royal Worcester Porcelain Company . In 1909 Eaton traveled to Jamaica to visit a brother and sister. During her two-year stay in Jamaica, she became enthusiastic about butterflies , which she captured in watercolors . In 1911 Eaton visited friends in New York City and in June 1911 got a job as an artist at the New York Botanical Garden , which she held until January 1932.

During her time at the New York Botanical Garden, Eaton created over 80 percent of the 800 panels for the Botanical Garden's Addisonia magazine , which appeared from 1916 to 1964. She was responsible for many of the illustrations used in the standard work by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose on the cactus family The Cactaceae: Descriptions and Illustrations of Plants of the Cactus Family , published from 1919 to 1923 . She has also drawn for National Geographic Magazine and Contributions from the United States National Herbarium . In May 1947 she returned to Great Britain.
