Mary Virginia Carey

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mary Virginia Carey (born May 19, 1925 in New Brighton, England , † May 27, 1994 in California ) was an American writer . She became known through her participation in the youth book series Die Drei ??? .

Life

Mary Virginia Carey was born in England in 1925. Her family emigrated to the United States that same year. Her father, John Cornelius, was an engineer and her mother was Mary Alice Carey. Carey attended the College of Mount St. Vincent in Riverdale ( New York ) where she graduated in 1946. Carey began working as a publicist in 1948 . In 1955, she obtained US citizenship and was employed by Walt Disney Productions in Burbank, California. She worked there as a writer for fourteen years. Mary Carey was a freelance writer between 1969 and her death in 1994. Carey was a member of the writers' association PEN and, in connection with it, campaigned against hatred of people and race, as well as for mutual respect and freedom of expression.

The three ???

1971 Carey wrote The Mystery of the flaming footprints ( The Three ??? and the flaming trail ) her first book in the series The Three Investigators . She was the first female writer to help write the series. Since the publisher did not want to unnecessarily publicize the fact that a woman was the author of a book series that was created for boys, her books were published under the acronym MV Carey . In the following years fifteen more books followed, all of which except for The Case of the Savage Statue were translated into German. A seventeenth book, entitled The Mystery of the Ghost Train , was not completed due to the series' discontinuation in the United States in 1987. It is noticeable that Carey often takes the plot away from the home of the three ??? in her books. ( Rocky Beach ) relocated. It is speculated whether she wanted to make the books more versatile with it, or whether she didn't feel safe in an imaginary city that someone else had created.

Prices

For her book A Place for Allie, Mary Carey won the 1986 Children's Literature Council of Southern California Prize .
