Marylebone Road

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Marylebone Road is an important thoroughfare in central London. It runs from west to east starting from the A40, exit Paddington , until the road is called Euston Road from Regent's Park . The road, which has three lanes in both directions, is part of the London Inner Ring Road and is part of the London Congestion Charge border, which is tolled by motorists.

Marylebone Road becomes the M40 itself after a few miles to the west and has an intersection with Kilburn Road (A5), which connects to the beginning of the M1. Most drivers use the road to get from central London to the Midlands and north of England . That is why the street is often very congested.

One of London's main attractions is on Marylebone Road: Madame Tussauds .

history

Marylebone is a district of the City of Westminster . The name is derived from a "St Mary's" church (now: St Marylebone Parish Church), which stands on the banks of the small stream "Tybourne". The area was therefore called St Mary at the bourne , which later became Marylebone.

Devonshire Terrace

Part of Marylebone Road, which was given its current name in 1862, was originally called Devonshire Terrace and began in the immediate vicinity of St Marylebone Parish Church , which is now at number 17 on Marylebone Road.

In the local house number 1 Devonshire Terrace lived between 1839 and 1851 the writer Charles Dickens (1812-1870), who wrote six novels here. Today this house is said to be numbered 15-17, which raises the question of how this information is compatible with the free-standing church under number 17.

If the notes of Daphne du Maurier are not to be misunderstood, the later writer George du Maurier (1834-1896) probably lived as a child at the same time and in exactly the same building in which Dickens lived from 1839 , at least in the years 1838 and 1839 , and in the year Dickens moved in, his sister Isabella was born there (see also: List of residential addresses of George du Maurier ).

St Marylebone Parish Church

Big names are also associated with the church itself. The poet Lord Byron (1788–1824) was baptized here in 1788 and the Anglican priest Charles Wesley (1707–1788) was buried in the adjacent cemetery in the same year . Charles Dickens' son was also baptized in the church and the baptism ceremony is described in his novel Dombey and Son (OT: Dombey and Son).

Marylebone Circus

The intersection of Marylebone Road with Baker Street was originally called Marylebone Circus .
