Masahide Kanayama
Augustine Masahide Kanayama ( Japanese 金山 政 英 Kanayama Masahide ; * 1909 ; † November 1997 ) was a Japanese diplomat .
Career
Kanayama worked from 1942 to 1945 under Ambassador Ken Harada at the Japanese legation to the Holy See . In his position he tried Pope Pius XII in the spring of 1945 . as an intermediary between the Japanese and US governments for an early surrender.
After the end of World War II , he followed Harada as Chargé d'affaires at the Holy See. In 1952 he went to the Japanese Embassy in the Philippines as a Legation Counselor , and from 1954 to 1957 he was Consul General in Hawaii . In 1957 he was appointed General Director of the European Department at the Japanese Foreign Ministry. From 1961 to 1963 he was Consul General in New York , where he also served two years as President of the Society of Foreign Consules . Between 1963 and 1972 he was the Japanese ambassador to Chile , Poland and South Korea . He left the foreign service in 1972, but remained active in several international research and cultural organizations.
Nine months after his death in 1997, he was buried in a Catholic cemetery near Seoul .
