Mashal

Ustad Mohammad Sayed , called Mashal ("torch") (* 1917 in Nihili, Ghor province , † February 7, 1998 in Herat ) was an Afghan miniature painter .

He attended school in Herat and lived and worked there. In Afghanistan he is referred to as a representative of Behzadic miniature art or as the "torch of the Behzadic miniature tradition". His model was the scholar and painter Ustad Kamaluddin Behzad, who was born in the city of Herat.

Ustad Mashal was a well known artist particularly in Iran and Afghanistan. Thanks to his art and paintings, some historical works of art such as the horse statues in the bazaar of Herat could be rebuilt by his students. Many of his masterpieces were destroyed by the Taliban when they invaded Herat .

Ustad Mashal was honored with various awards in Iran . He died on February 7, 1998.
