On January 9, 1945, US troops of the 6th US Army under Lieutenant General Walter Krueger as well as Philippine and Mexican units landed in the Gulf of Lingayén on Luzon in the course of the reconquest of the Philippines . Opposite them stood the 14th Regional Army of the Japanese Army . There were several Japanese units in Calamba. More were added in the days leading up to the massacre. On February 1, a Japanese unit blew up the El Real sugar factory in the Dominican monastery. The Japanese soldiers rounded up the residents, men, women and children at several points in the city and killed them. The city was completely burned down. The bodies were cremated and buried in various locations outside the city. Five priests left tethered by the Japanese survived along with the civilians who had previously left the city.
