Nag Hammadi massacre

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nag Hammadi massacre ( Arabic مذبحة نجع حمادى) was a bloodbath of Coptic Christians that took place on January 7, 2010 in the Egyptian city of Nag Hammadi .

The massacre occurred outside Nag Hammadi Cathedral when Coptic Christians left the church after the midnight Christmas mass was celebrated according to the Coptic calendar . The carnage resulted in the murder of eight Copts and one Muslim. The only Muslim victim was killed outside the city while driving a taxi with some Christian friends. He was the church security guard and skipped his duty when he was killed. He finished work at 7 p.m. and went home to change clothes before going out with his Christian friends. Nine other Copts were seriously injured and two Muslims were wounded in the attack.

Following the attack, two other Coptic Christian women were killed in nearby villages when a mob set their homes on fire. Several Coptic shops were looted, set on fire and destroyed in simultaneous attacks.

A week later, on January 15th, 29 Egyptian human rights activists, bloggers and political party members visited Nag Hammadi to show their solidarity with the Coptic community against the attacks on Coptic civilians. The group included prominent activists such as Wael Abbas (* 1974), member of the April 6 Youth Movement , and members of the Democratic Front Party . There were also eight women, one of whom was a French citizen. All 29 activists were arrested by the Egyptian police when they wanted to express their condolences to the families of those killed. The activists were interrogated by the Qena Governorate Prosecutor . Some of them were accused of demonstrating illegally, shouting slogans against the state and causing unrest. They denied the allegations, stating that the police arrested them upon arrival at the train station and that they did not even have the time to get involved.

The Nag Hammadi massacre attracted international attention because of the precarious situation for the Christian minority in Egypt . It was created by the Catholic Pope Benedict XVI. , The Lebanese MPs Nadim Gemayel ( Kataeb ), the Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini and the Canadian Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon condemned. The attacks were one of the most serious outbreaks of anti-Christian violence in Egypt and are believed to be the worst since the mass murder of 21 Coptic Christians in Kosheh in January 2000.
