Lawrence Cannon PC (born December 6, 1947 in Québec , Québec ) is a Canadian politician of the Conservative Party of Canada and former Foreign Minister .

Life

Parentage, studies and professional career

Cannon, whose father was a lawyer of Irish descent, came from influential political families in Québec, both on his father's side and on his mother's side: his great-grandfather, William Power, was a member of the Canadian House of Commons from 1902 to 1908 and from 1911 to 1917 , as was his grandfather Lucien Cannon , who was longtime member of the House of Commons, Solicitor General of Canada, and Justice of the Québec Supreme Court. His maternal grandfather, Charles Gavan Power , had not only been a member of the House of Commons and Senator for over fifty years , but had also been a minister on several occasions. In addition, his two uncles Charles-Arthur Cannon and Francis Gavon Power were also members of the House of Commons. Furthermore, his great uncles Joseph Ignatius Power, Lawrence Arthur Cannon and William Gerard Power were long-time members of the National Assembly of Québec . The Supreme Court Justice of Canada , Lawrence Arthur Dumoulin Cannon was also his great-uncle.

After attending school, he first studied political science at the University of Montreal and graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Political Science). He completed another postgraduate course in management at the University of Laval in Québec in 1979 with a Master of Business Administration (MBA). He then worked in the private sector and initially worked as an analyst at Société de Développement Industriel between 1979 and 1981 , before being President and General Manager of Les Radiateurs Roy Itée from 1981 to 1985 .

Political career

Cannon began his political career in 1985 in the Parti libéral du Québec with the election to the National Assembly of Québec, in which he represented the constituency of La Peltrie until 1994 . During this time, he was appointed Minister of Communications of Québec by Robert Bourassa , Prime Minister of Québec , in 1990 and held this office until 1994. In 2001 he also became a member of Gatineau City Council and has been a member since then.

After joining the Conservative Party of Canada, Cannon was elected in the election of January 23, 2006 as a member of the Canadian House of Commons and represented the constituency of Pontiac in this . Immediately after the election, Prime Minister Stephen Harper appointed him Minister for Transport Canada , Infrastructure and Communities to his cabinet . After a cabinet reshuffle, Cannon finally took over the office of Foreign Secretary from David Emerson on October 30, 2008 . In the 2011 general election, he was defeated by NDP candidate Mathieu Ravignat.
