David Emerson

David Lee Emerson PC (born September 17, 1945 in Montreal ) is a Canadian politician of the Conservative Party of Canada .

Life

After attending school, Emerson began studying economics at the University of Alberta and graduated with a Master of Arts (MA Economics) in 1970 after receiving a Bachelor of Arts (BA Economics) in 1968 . He also earned a Ph.D. in Economics from Queen's University in Kingston .

Emerson, who was a member of the Liberal Party of Canada until 2006 , served between 1984 and 1986 as Vice Minister for Finance and Vice Minister to the then Prime Minister of British Columbia , Bill Bennett .

In the 2004 general election , Emerson was elected as a representative of the Liberal Party in the lower house and has since represented the Vancouver Kingsway constituency there . Immediately after the election, Prime Minister Paul Martin appointed him Minister of Industry in the 27th cabinet and was a member of this until the end of Martin's term on February 5, 2006. As usual for cabinet members, he also became a member of the Canadian Privy Council .

After Emerson converted to the Conservative Party in 2006, Prime Minister Stephen Harper appointed him Minister for International Trade in the 28th Cabinet on February 6, 2006 . After the resignation of Foreign Minister Maxime Bernier on May 26, 2008, Emerson succeeded him on May 29, 2008 and held this office until October 29, 2008.
