history

World famous Nag Hammadi was established by found there in December 1945 thirteen papyrus - Codes in Coptic language. The exact circumstances of the find remained unclear for a long time, especially since the finders initially tried to sell the codes on the black market. The writings have been in the Coptic Museum in Cairo since 1975 . The 47 scriptures contained are known as the Nag Hammadi scriptures or the Nag Hammadi library . They date from the period between the 1st century and the 4th century. Most of these writings of a predominantly Gnostic orientation were previously unknown or only known in fragments. This particularly includes the Gospel of Thomas .

For Orthodox Christmas on January 7, 2010, Muslim riflemen shot 11 Coptic Christians after a Christmas mass in front of Nag-Hammadi Cathedral; this event is known as the Nag Hammadi massacre .
