The Massilia Sound System is a reggae band from Marseille founded in 1984 .
The group mixes reggae, rub-a-dub and ragga . The texts are written in French and Occitan , which can be explained by the identification with Marseille, her hometown.
After they couldn't find a record company for a long time, they founded their own indie label Roker Promocion .
Band history
Tatou, Jali and Geotari founded the Massilia Sound System in 1984. The first album Parla Patois was released in 1992. By this time they had released two demo cassettes: Rude et souple and Vive le PIIM .
Along with the success of Olympique Marseille , the Massilia Sound System made Marseille famous again in the 1990s. This gave the young Marseilles a positive identity and were proud of their city again.
In 2000 they had their national breakthrough with their album 3968 CR 13 . They reached number 58 on the French charts and stayed in the charts for 3 weeks with the album.
On February 14, 2002, the members of the Massilia Sound System Mazzarino René and François Ridel were awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres .
After the release of the live album Massilia fait tourner for the group's 20th anniversary in 2004, the members worked on solo projects: Oai Star (Rock, members from the Massilia Sound System: Gari Gréù, Kayalik. Former members: Lux Botté, BluM; others Members: dubmood ), Moussu T e lei Jovents (members: Tatou, Blu; Chanson ) and Papet J ( Dub , solo project René Mazzarino)
After three years of working on these solo projects, the formation Oai e libertat released the newest album in 2007 , in which they move away from their original roots and orientate themselves more towards electronics and pop.
On July 18, 2008, former member Lux Botté died of cancer in Gardanne at the age of 47 .
