The Matafao , also Matafao Peak , is the highest point on the island of Tutuila in American Samoa in the central Pacific Ocean . It represents the highest of numerous peaks of a former shield volcano, which are lined up around the 9 km wide, south-open bay of Pago Pago , the former caldera of the volcano. The mountain is not part of the American Samoa National Park , but forms its own National Natural Landmark .
