Matayoshi Shinpō

Matayoshi Shinpō ( Japanese 又 吉 眞 豊 ; * December 27, 1921 in Okinawa ; † September 7, 1997 ) was an Okinawan expert of Kobudō and karate , the son of Matayoshi Shinkō (1888-1947) and heir to the created by his father Style of Matayoshi Kobudō ( 又 吉 古 武 道 ) and Kingai-ryū Tōde Jutsu ( 金 硬 流 唐 手術 ).

Life

Matayoshi Shinpō began studying karate and at the age of eight under the guidance of Kyan Chōtoku. After his father returned from his second trip to China in 1934, he learned from him other Kobudo arts (including Sai , Nunchaku , Tonfa , Kama ). In 1935 he also began to learn the style of Shōrin-ryū Ha Tsuru Ken ( 少林 流派 鶴 拳 ) - White Crane - with Go Kenki. After his father's death, he continued his work. From 1945 to 1960 he taught Kobudō in Kawasaki, Japan . He then returned to Okinawa , where he first taught in the Dōjō Shōdōkan ( 尚 道 館 ) by Higa Seikō. In 1969 he founded his own dōjō, which he called Kōdōkan - place of the enlightened path ( 光 道 館 ) - in memory of his father, whose first name Shinkō means "true light". The following year he founded the Ryūkyū Kobudō Federation (Ryūkyū Kobudō Renmei) in Naha . Matayoshi Shinpō undertook numerous demonstration and training trips to different countries. He has trained a large number of experts, including Chinen Kenyū (born 1944) and Zenei Oshiro (born 1953), two Okinawans who were born in France and have been teaching in numerous European dojo since then. Kenyu Chinen is the world's most famous Kobudo expert trained by Shinpo Matayoshi, who founded the World Oshukai Federation (WOF) and has been its chief instructor ever since. Since 1973, Matayoshi Shinpō also maintained close relationships with Roland Habersetzer , a French martial arts expert.
