Mateo Saldaña Dosal

Mateo de los Ángeles Saldaña Dosal (born August 2, 1875 in Totatiche / Jalisco , † 1951 in Mexico City ) was a Mexican painter, sculptor and restorer .

biography

Saldaña, son of Miguel Saldaña y Francisca Dosal, grew up in Colotlán . He came to Mexico City at the age of 16 and studied at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes . There he was a student of Jesús Fructuoso Contreras .

From 1902 he taught himself as a professor at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes. He also restored several paintings, including pre-Hispanic ones, and frescoes . Saldaña also painted the current coat of arms of Saltillo based on a design by Vito Alessio Robles . Some of his pictures have already fetched prices between 10 and 50 million US dollars.

In Mexico City today the Avenida Mateo Saldaña is named after him and in Totatiche his name is listed on the honor plaque erected in 2000 for famous people of the municipality .
