Mateo Seoane

Mateo Seoane y Sobral (born September 21, 1791 in Valladolid , † June 1, 1870 ) was a Spanish doctor, politician, Hispanist and lexicographer.

Life

Mateo Seoane y Sobral studied medicine in Salamanca and graduated in 1812. As a liberal, he was denied a university career. During the Trienio Liberal he was a member of the city of Valladolid in 1821 , was sentenced to death and in 1823 went into exile in London for 10 years. On his return he was a recognized hygiene expert and was a member of the Real Academia Nacional de Medicina from its foundation in 1861 .

In London he was responsible for the very successful editing of the Spanish-English dictionary by Giuseppe Baretti and Henry Neuman.

A street in Valladolid is named after him.
