Material data sheet

The material data sheet ( MDB for short ) serves as proof of the material composition of a component , semi-finished product, material and pure substance. The creation and administration of material data sheets for the automotive industry takes place in IMDS .

There are input guidelines, the so-called recommendations, for creating a material data sheet. These describe how a material data sheet must be created. The material data sheet has a hierarchical structure: First the component is named, below there are one or more materials, followed by the basic substances that make up the material. If semi-finished products were used to manufacture the component, they can be displayed between the components and the materials. The data sheets created are sent to the respective customer, who in turn incorporates the material data sheet into his material data sheet. The manufacturing process of entire, complex components is simulated virtually. At the end, a material data sheet is created that is made up of many sub-components. The last MDS creator is the supplier who delivers the component and the associated material data sheet to the automobile manufacturer. The material data sheet is therefore created along the supply chain and ends with the automobile manufacturer. Everyone who processes a material data sheet is responsible for the correctness of his entries. If the materials or weights of components or sub-components change, a new data sheet must be drawn up and then passed on along the supply chain to the automobile manufacturer.

The following structure is divided into a material data sheet:

Component (assembly)

A component (assembly) can consist of one part such as B. a screw, but also, as in an assembly (ZB) from several sub-components, z. B. a bracket and a screw, etc. Each component in turn consists of one or more materials, which in turn consist of pure substances.

Example screw: A screw can consist of several materials - the base material steel and a galvanic coating (e.g. zinc coating). Passivations and oils can also be found above this as further materials.

Workpiece

A semi-finished product is a semi-finished product that consists of one or more materials. A semi-finished product does not have a defined weight. B. traded by the meter. An example of a semi-finished product commonly used in the automotive industry is a steel coil . Parts for vehicle manufacture are punched out of this and processed further.

Materials

A material in the sense of IMDS usually consists of several basic substances. So is z. B. Steel is a material that contains a number of alloying elements in addition to iron. If it is a material that is described in an international standard, in addition to the material designation specified in the standard, the material number specified in the standard and the standard itself must be specified in the IMDS.

Basic substances

A pure substance in the sense of IMDS consists either of an element from the periodic table of the elements or is a chemical compound, as it is e.g. B. represent salts, minerals or organic compounds. Most basic substances are stored with CAS numbers and can thus be clearly identified.

Reference to the GADSL

The GADSL is an instrument for communicating substance bans in materials and at the same time serves as a basis for checking the approval of the material data sheets by the automobile manufacturers .
