Maternian

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maternian († July 7, 368 ), also Maternien , was Bishop of Reims from 348 to 359 .

As an early 4th century bishop, not much is known about Maternian. His brother was Maternus, 316–328 Bishop of Milan . At the mediation of Ebo von Reims , 816–835 and 840–841 Bishop of Reims and 845–851 Bishop of Hildesheim , the bones of Maternian, who was venerated as a saint, were brought to Northern Germany by the Bremen Bishop Rimbert . This must have happened before 882, because in that year the Bücken Collegiate Church was consecrated by Rimbert the Maternian. He is also said to have brought relics from Maternian to Heiligenstedten .

The 13th century stained glass windows in the Bücken Collegiate Church do not show the miraculous healings of Maternian, but those of Saint Maternus . Since nothing was known about Maternian at the time the stained glass windows were made, the legend of the saint with a similar name was adopted.
