Matheton agon

The Matheton Agon is a prize from the Vischer-Heussler Foundation and the Institute for Classical Philology at the University of Basel for the best Matura thesis in Greek or the most innovative Abitur or Baccalauréat work or specialist work as an expanded GFS (equivalent determination of student performance in Baden-Württemberg ) and has been advertised annually since 2006.

All pupils in Switzerland and the RegioTriRhena (Basel) are eligible to participate . The topics for this may come from the entire spectrum of Greek philology. For example, the works can consist of a literary and linguistic interpretation by an author or a specific text passage, provide editions and comments on texts or go into the reception history of authors, texts and motifs; In general, all works are accepted that are of a high level and deal with the most varied of aspects of the Greek language, literature and culture.

The work submitted should be around 25 pages long. It can also be higher. The papers can be written in German, French, Italian, English and ancient Greek.

Theses written by high school students outside of the Matura can also be submitted if they meet the requirements of a Matura thesis. This should be ensured by the assessment and, if necessary, supervision of a Greek teacher employed at the school.
