The Mathieu Rock ( English ; French Rocher Mathieu ) is an ice-free cliff rock off the coast of the East Antarctic Adelieland . It's halfway between Cape Bickerton and Rock X on the east side of the entrance to Victor Bay .
Aerial photographs of the rock were taken by the United States Navy during Operation Highjump (1946–1947). It was mapped during a French Antarctic expedition that lasted from 1952 to 1953. It is named after the French astronomer Claude Louis Mathieu (1783–1875). The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names transferred the French name to English in 1955.
