Jewish cemetery in Güssing

The Güssing Jewish cemetery is located in the town of Güssing in the Güssing district in Burgenland . The cemetery is a listed building .

history

In 1939 members of the NSDAP removed the gravestones from the cemetery overnight and sold them to a stonemason among others.

In 2001 some gravestones that were assigned to Güssing were discovered in Graz and then brought back to Güssing, where they and other symbolic gravestones were set up by the Schalom cemetery association . As further research showed, however, there is a possibility that the tombstones did not come from the Güssing cemetery. Today the cemetery is maintained by the building yard of the municipality of Güssing.

The Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Graz had a memorial stone erected on the cemetery with the following inscription:

“In memory of the once flourishing Jewish community of Güssing and its members, who were humiliated, robbed and expelled during the Nazi era. Many of them were murdered. We remember their sufferings and sacrifices. Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Graz "
