Gattendorf Jewish cemetery
The Gattendorf Jewish Cemetery is located in the Gattendorf community in the Neusiedl am See district in Burgenland . The Jewish cemetery is a listed building .
history
The cemetery outside the village has a size of 2733 m², on which there are 120 tombstones . From the middle of the 19th century, it also served as a burial place for the Jewish population of the nearby towns of Nickelsdorf and Neudorf bei Parndorf .
A synagogue already existed in the town, ten kilometers southwest of Kittsee , in 1806 . In 1885 Gattendorf was attached to the Jewish community of Kittsee.
In 1934 there were 19 Jewish residents in Gattendorf, some of whom fell victim to the Shoah . While the new synagogue built in 1862, which survived the Nazi era - albeit in a rather desolate condition - was demolished in 1996, the Jewish cemetery still reminds of the history of the Jews in the community.
