history

Jews were first mentioned in Mattersburg in 1526, and the synagogue was mentioned in 1647. Around 1770, when the 7 communities were named for Mattersburg, 179 Jewish families were named. The ghetto and synagogue were destroyed in 1940 and the temple treasures were carried away. Most of the tombstones were also abducted.

In 1966, all of the tombstones and fragments of the Jewish cemetery that were still in existence were put together to form display walls. Symbolic gravestones were distributed in the open area.
