The mattresses direct AG is a company that was originally founded in 1929 as Bettina innerspring unit and in its product range in addition to mattresses , bed frames , toppers and box spring beds and accessories, such as pillows and blankets operates. In 2014 the name was changed to matratzen direct AG after losing a legal dispute. The company operates over 170 branches. In addition to the branches, the company's product range is also offered in the online shop. The company, headquartered in Cologne, currently employs over 400 people in its existing branches. The executive board member Christian Bayr sits at the helm of the unlisted AG. The other shareholders of the stock corporation include the holding company Columna GmbH and other high-turnover companies in the industry.

history

The company was founded in 1929 in Cologne-Ossendorf - originally as Bettina Federkernwerk - later as Bettina Matratzenfabrik GmbH. In 1998 the company moved to a modern production plant in Elsdorf near Cologne. The sale was made exclusively to dealers. In 1999 the first own branch was opened under the name Bettina Fabrikverkauf.

In September 2004, Klaus Hartmann took over Bettina Matratzenfabrik GmbH. The name was changed to Matratzen Factory Outlet AG (MFO). Klaus Hartmann founded Matratzen Concord in 1987 and sold it to the Beter Bed Group in 1999 .

In 2004 the company achieved sales of € 28.2 million. Thanks to the rapid expansion of the branches, this increased to € 38.3 million in 2005 and to € 60.0 million in 2006. In 2007 sales were € 87.5 million.

Up to 2,000 mattresses and custom-made items, e.g. for B. boats, caravans, trucks and special equipment.

After a ruling by the Federal Court of Justice, MFO was no longer allowed to call its branches “ outlets ”. In response, the Elsdorf production site was closed in 2014 and the name was changed to matratzen direct . Before that, direct mail was sent to the public about the imminent closure of the business and the closure of the former mattress factory outlet branches.

Matratzen direct AG has been operating its branches and online shop under the name MFO Matratzen since 2016.

Matratzen Direct AG applied for protective shield proceedings at the Cologne District Court in February 2017. The protective shield proceedings were successfully concluded in December 2017.
