Beter Bed NV is an international trading company from the Netherlands . The company trades in bedroom furniture and all related products and is the market leader in this sector in the Netherlands. Beter Bed NV shares have been traded on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange since 1996 . However, Beter Bed NV is not one of the 25 companies from which the AEX index is calculated.

The company's headquarters are in Uden in the Dutch province of North Brabant . Beter Bed NV is divided into various retail chains , which are active in several European countries and together have 1064 branches, and serve various market segments, from cash-and-carry products to exclusive bedroom furniture. In addition, Beter Bed has its own mattresses developed and produced through its subsidiary DBC .

Beter Bed Holding employs 2,420 full-time employees in six countries.

history

The company was founded in 1981 under the name Beter Bed in Uden. Shortly thereafter, the first three bedroom specialty stores were opened. At that time, bedroom specialty stores were a new and unknown phenomenon in the Netherlands, as this market segment was then dominated by large department stores and residential specialty stores . The concept of offering high-quality goods and a wide range of products at a lower price paid off and was the starting point for all of Beter Bed's future activities. The company began to grow in the second half of the 1980s.

In 1986 our own production facility for the manufacture of MDF boards was set up under the name Bedden en Bedden BV in Uden. Further production facilities were later added through the purchase of two factories in Poland, Ecowood (1994) and Interwood (1996).

The IPO of Beter Bed Holding NV 1996 was carried shares of Beter Bed Holding NV are traded on the stock exchange in Amsterdam ( € Next traded). In the same year , a further company was added to the company through the acquisition of the Dormaël company , a retail chain aimed at the higher market segment. In the following year the company Beter Baby was founded with the aim of gaining market share in the trade with baby furniture and its accessories. At the same time, Beter Bed acquired the company DFC Comfort , whereby Beter Bed secured the exclusive right of representation for orthopedic mattresses and pillows of this company within the Benelux countries .

After a year of construction, a new administration building and a new central warehouse with an area of ​​16,000 m² were moved into in Uden in January 1997 in order to meet the needs of the expanded company and the future planned expansion and the associated demand.

Bedden Dump was founded in the second half of the 1990s , with the aim of supplying the market with cheaper goods as a discount store. It has been operating under the name BeddenREUS since 2005 .

In 1998 the first Beter Beds branches were opened in Germany. At the same time, the company expanded through the purchase of the German company Matratzen Concord based in Cologne , at the same time the expansion of this company to Austria, Switzerland (1998), as well as the Netherlands (1999), and France and Italy was initiated.

The company structure changed in 2000. The company Bedden and Bedden was sold and the subsidiary Dormaël converted into a franchise company. Beter Baby was sold after a management buy-out . Mark Diks, the founder of Beter Beds, resigned from his position as CEO and moved to the holding's supervisory board , from which he retired in the first half of 2002. Frans Geelen has held the position of CEO since 2001.

In 2001 the activities of the subsidiary DFC Comfort were terminated and a new company, DBC International , dealt with the development, marketing and sales of mattresses developed under its own management.

In the same year the number of all branches covered by Beter Bed NV was 555.

In 2002 an attempt was made to take over the company through an offer to buy shares at a price of 16 euros. The takeover failed in view of the insufficient amount of the offer and, at the same time, uncertain financing.

In 2003 all branches of the subsidiary Matratzen Concord in France and Italy were closed.

In May 2005 the last production facility, the Interwood company , was sold in Poland, after the Polish company Ecowood had been closed in 2004 . The move away from its own manufacturing operations was the result of a change in the company's previous strategy. From then on, the focus was again on the company's core activities, namely trading in bedroom furniture. So in June 2005, the first branch of were Slaapgenoten, a company that all since 2000 acting as a franchise corporate offices of the company from the merger Dormael was opened and the takeover of the Spanish retail chain in September of that year, El Gigante del Colchón announced that at that Time was represented with 20 branches in the region around Barcelona . At the end of June 2009, El Gigante del Colchón had 47 branches , spread over the entire region of Catalonia and the region around Madrid .

In December 2005 the activities of the subsidiary Beter Bed Germany were terminated. The branches of Beter Bed Germany were reopened as Matratzen Concord branches .

In October 2006, a second concept for the sale of mattresses in Germany was introduced with the opening of two branches under the name Matratzen-Abverkauf ( MAV ).

In September 2007 the first subsidiary of the Matratzen Concord subsidiary was opened in Belgium. Matratzen Concord is now represented there with seven branches.

In December 2008 the first Polish subsidiary of Matratzen Concord was opened under the name Materace Concord in Warsaw . The opening of further branches in Poland is planned and was realized with the opening of two further branches in 2009.

On April 14, 2009 it was announced that Frans Geelen would retire from his position as CEO in April 2010 at the latest. In a press release on October 9, 2009, Ton Anbeek was presented to the public as his successor in this function. Ton Anbeek took office on March 1, 2010. On April 23, 2009, a press release announced that CFO Ric van der Woude had accepted a position in another company. Since September 1, 2009, Duncan van Hoeve has been the CFO of Beter Bed Holding.
