Matt Gillett (born August 12, 1988 in Macksville , New South Wales ) is an Australian rugby league player. He plays in the NRL for the Brisbane Broncos .

Start of career

Gillett moved his family from Macksville to Bribie Island , Queensland, when he was three . There he played rugby for the Bribie Island Warrigals and Morayfield State High School. In 2008 he played for the first time for the U-20 team of the Brisbane Broncos . In 2009 he played for the Northern Suburbs Devils in the Queensland Cup , in which he won the Rookie of the Year Award. He also played in the City vs Country Game of the Queensland Cup, in which he played for Queensland City.

Professional career

Due to his impressive performances in the Queensland Cup, Ivan Henjak , the coach of the Brisbane Broncos at the time , let him appear in the 2010 preseason. He tried it in his NRL debut against the North Queensland Cowboys in Round 1. He finished the season with 12 tries in 21 games. On June 23, he extended his contract with the Broncos for three years. Gillett won the Brisbane Broncos Rookie of the Year Award and the Rookie of the Year Award at the Dally M Awards on September 8th . In September he was also elected to the Prime Minister's XIII and won with them 30:18 against Papua New Guinea .

In 2011, Gillett finished the season with 6 tries in 19 games. In the semifinals against the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles , which Brisbane lost 14:26, he replaced Darren Lockyer , who was injured on the cheekbone , in the position of the connector.

In 2012, he took part with the Queensland Maroons in all three games of the State of Origin Series , which the Maroons won for the seventh time in a row. He finished his NRL season with 6 attempts in 23 games.

In April 2013, Gillett extended his contract with the Broncos again for three years. He returned to the State of Origin Series, won by the Maroons for the eighth year in a row, and won the Prime Minister's XIII 50-6 against Papua New Guinea. He finished the season with 7 tries in 22 games.

In 2014 Gillett competed with the Broncos in the NRL Auckland Nines and made his debut for Australia during the ANZAC Test against New Zealand . He took part for the third time in a row in the State of Origin Series, but this time the New South Wales Blues won their first title since 2005. In round 21 he completed his 100th NRL game against the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles. He finished the season with 10 tries in 21 games. He was originally supposed to take part in the Four Nations 2014 with Australia , but had to cancel due to an injury.
