Matt (hew) Herskowitz (* 1968 in Rensselaerville ) is an American pianist , composer , songwriter and arranger .

Life

Herkowitz studied at the Juilliard School in New York and at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He has lived in Montreal since 1999. His musical repertoire includes a wide variety of genres such as classical, jazz, pop and world music. He has released several albums as a pianist, including Alexander Glasunow's Second Piano Concerto (1998), Gabriel's Message (2006, after Christmas carols, received a Félix Award for best jazz album), Matt Herskowitz Upstairs (2012, with arrangements of classical works and his own compositions), Bach XXI (2015) and the solo album Mirror Image (2019).

Since 2002 Herkowitz has directed his own trio MaD Fusion with bassist Mat Fieldes and drummer Damien Bassman . Her debut album Forget Me Not: Homage to Lew Soloff was released in 2005 and was nominated for a Félix Award in the jazz improvisation category. The trio is a regular guest at international festivals and has toured various projects through Belgium, Italy, Canada and the USA. With the jazz pianist John Roney he plays as a duo Piano Chameleons jazz arrangements of popular classical works. The albums Shiksa (2015) with original compositions and arrangements of traditional Eastern European folk songs and Key of A with Cesar Franck's Violin Sonata in A major and Ludwig van Beethoven's Kreutzersonata were created in collaboration with the Canadian violinist Lara St. John .

Herkowitz's Concerto for Piano, Electric Bass, Drums and Orchestra was premiered by the Cologne Philharmonic and the Absolute Ensemble under the direction of Kristjan Järvi and recorded by WDR . The world premiere of his Concerto Grosso by the New York symphony orchestra The Knights took place in 2012 in the Naumburg Orchestral Concerts series in New York's Central Park .
