Matt Piet

Matt Piet (* around 1990 in Chicago ) is an American jazz and improvisation musician ( piano , composition ). "Piet is a melodic player," wrote Peter Margasak in the Chicago Reader, "but his quality lies in his rhythmic liveliness and a fractal sense of phrasing ."

Live and act

Piet grew up in Chicago's suburb Palos Park and began learning piano and singing when he was ten. In addition to his classical training at Berklee College of Music in Boston, he dealt with jazz, improvisation and composition. In 2014, after his return to Chicago, he worked on the local jazz and improvisation scene a. a. in a trio with Dave Rempis and Tim Daisy , their own trio (with Charlie Kirchen (bass) and Julian Kirshner (drums) or Ben Dillinger and Tommaso Moretti) and with Jake Wark (tenor saxophone) and Bill Harris (drums) in the formation Four Letter Words ( Blow Album , 2016).

In the same year Piet released the album Of Sound Mind (Amalgam Music) under his own name , which he had recorded in trio with bassist Albert Wildeman and drummer Julian Kirshner . It got a positive review in All About Jazz . Matt Piet leads the Incipient Sessions series of events , with performances by Chicago musicians including Tim Daisy, Nick Mazzarella and Josh Berman .
