Matthew Stephen C. "Matt" Targett (born December 24, 1985 in Chertsey , Surrey) is an Australian freestyle swimmer .

Matt Targett became the fifth Australian swimmer to break the 49-second limit on the 100-meter freestyle course in February 2008. In good shape he was able to qualify for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , where he competed over three courses. With the 4 × 100m freestyle relay, he achieved his greatest international success and won the bronze medal. Over 100 m freestyle Targett reached the final, in which he was seventh. With the 4 × 100m layer relay he reached the final, but was not used there when winning the silver medal. The following year he competed in the 2009 World Swimming Championships in Rome and won the silver medal in the 50 m butterfly and the bronze medal with the 4 × 100 m individual relay. With the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay, he finished eighth and thus last place in the final.
