Matthäus Gundelach , also Gondolach , Gundlach (* 1566 in Kassel , † 1653 in Augsburg ) was a German painter and graphic artist at the court of Emperor Rudolf II .

Life

He came from the noble Gundelach family. In 1593 he came to Prague. Between 1609 and 1612 he worked as a chamber painter for Rudolf II in Prague Castle. After Rudolf II's death, Gundelach worked in Bohemia for the Fürstenberg family . On their behalf, Matthäus Gundelach also created works in the core area of ​​the Fürstenbergs. One example is the town of Haslach in the Black Forest, which among the Fürstenbergers had become a center of mining since the Middle Ages. There the two paintings “Annunciation” and “Coronation of Mary” on the baroque high altar in the monastery church of the Capuchin monastery of St. Christophorus on Gundelach go back. Both were created around 1614. From 1617 Gundelach was a member of the Malerzeche in Augsburg .

Gundelach was married to Regina Gundelach, b. Gretzinger, widowed Heintz. Joseph Heintz the Younger (approx. 1600–1678), son of Joseph Heintz the Elder , was his foster son and apprentice boy. He lived in Venice since 1625 at the latest. Mainly Venetian vedutas have survived from him.
