Matthew Church

The Matthäuskirche is an Evangelical Lutheran church in the Hanover district of List .

history

The residents of the List were originally parish to the Marienkirche in Hainholz . After the population there had more than tripled from 900 to around 3,000 within twenty years from 1870 onwards, the consistory in Hanover initiated the formation of its own parish. As early as 1893, the Hainhölzer community set up its own parish office for the List, and in 1899 a nurses' station. The farm owner Heinrich Kollenrodt donated the property for a new church, for which the foundation stone was laid in 1903. The neo-Gothic building made of limestone and sandstone on the plan of an isosceles cross, which offered space for up to 800 people, was designed by the architect Eduard Wendebourg . The building was inaugurated in 1906. By 1912 the number grew to over 6,000 and prompted the establishment of a second pastorate.

As part of the metal donation for the First World War , the church lost part of the bells and the organ. The ringing was completed again in 1926 on three bells. In 1938 the organ was renewed.

During the heavy air raid on Hanover in the night of October 8th to 9th, 1943, the structure was badly damaged by high explosive and incendiary bombs. After the restoration, the holes torn in the masonry are now only visible on the tower side. The services were moved to the confirmation hall of the rectory, which also burned down on December 15, 1944. The air raid on January 15, 1945 finally destroyed the church. The Matthew parish was initially supplied provisionally in the neighboring parish of St. Markus.

In June 1950, State Superintendent Theodor Laasch inaugurated a Bartning emergency church in the area of the destroyed church , which gave the community a new home. Only one bell remained from the previous bell, which was supplemented by a sponsored bell from the former church district of Görlitz. The further increase in parish members (to around 24,000 by 1960) led to the establishment of two daughter parishes (Johannes and Heilig-Geist-Kirche (Vahrenwald) ), for which the Gethsemane Church and the Vahrenwalder Church also gave up parts of their parish.

In 1961, planning began for the new construction of the Matthäuskirche. According to plans by Klaus and Gudrun Vogel (Bemerode), a modern new building was created using the tower and the chancel (west choir) of the old church. The foundation stone was laid on June 16, 1971. In October 1972 the new St. Matthew's Church was consecrated. The wooden ties of the emergency church were reused in the Zacchaeus parish.
