Matthias Berger (* 2. January 1968 ) is a German non-party politicians in Saxony . He was elected full-time mayor in 2001 and lord mayor of the city of Grimma in the Leipzig district in 2008 and 2015 .

Mayor

On June 10, 2001, Berger was elected mayor of Grimma: As a non-party candidate and as an election proposal from the CDU, he received 57.6 percent of the vote. A year later Berger became known nationwide with his fight against the effects of the floods in Central Europe in 2002 for his city. The people of Grimma honored him six years later: On June 8, 2008, Berger received 98.2 percent of the vote in the first ballot for the mayor election. On June 7, 2015, Berger was confirmed in office with almost 90 percent of the votes and is now mayor of the city of Grimma for the third time.

Eleven years after the “flood of the century” in 2002, Grimma was hit by the floods in Central Europe in 2013 ; Once again, Lord Mayor Matthias Berger - now with his experience of the flood in 2002 - campaigned for Grimma and its citizens.

The damage caused by the two floods in Grimma was in the three-digit million range: According to MDR information, the damage balance in 2002 was around 250 million euros; In 2013 it was another 150 million euros.

National political commitment

Together with Antje Hermenau , Berger has been involved as a prominent person in the new "Citizens' Movement for Saxony" since autumn 2018, a political "collection movement of the center" according to his own statements.
