Matthias Gäbler

Matthias Gäbler (born September 23, 1949 , † September 23, 2009 near Hohnstein ) was a German climber and mountaineer .

In the 1970s and 1980s, Gäbler was one of the most famous climbers in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains , along with Bernd Arnold . He succeeded in numerous first ascents with a high degree of difficulty . These included the White Smoke (IXc) at the Free Tower and the South Face Route (IXc) at the Kreuzturm in the Affensteinen in 1984 . In 1986, Gäbler climbed through another IXc for the first time at the Osterspitze am Brand with the dance of nerves .

The graduate engineer for electrical engineering worked for the German Alpine Club as a rock climbing trainer.

The mountain climber from Hohnstein had a fatal accident at his own birthday party at the Gautsch grotto in Saxon Switzerland, named after Karl Gautsch . As a result of a misstep, he fell down a five meter high wall.
