Matthias Kofmehl

Matthias Kofmehl (* 1953 in Zurich ) is a Swiss horn player , alphorn player and horn teacher.

biography

Matthias Kofmehl received his first violin and trumpet lessons at the age of seven. Later he switched to viola and french horn . In high school he took conducting lessons from Armin Schibler and trained his voice with professional singers. After successfully completing his high school diploma, he obtained a teaching certificate and taught at primary level for several years.

From 1980 he studied French horn at the Zurich Conservatory in solo horn player of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich , Günther throat . From 1984-2000 he was a permanent member of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. He has also performed as a soloist in Switzerland, Europe , Israel , Mexico , the USA and Russia . In addition to French horn concerts, he mainly played alphorn concerts, including the concert for alphorn and string orchestra composed especially for him by the Swiss composer Carl Rütti in 1987, and premieres various works. A first CD recording of various works with members of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich (Virtuoso Alphorn, 1997) was awarded a short time after the publication of Schweizer Radio International (this CD, which has been out of print for a few years, was released again in a limited edition on Christmas 2010). Further recordings followed with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra (Jean Daetwyler: Alphorn Concerto No. 2) as well as a chamber music formation and others. a. with Mirjam Tschopp and Werner Bärtschi (Mario Beretta: The Alphorn and the Sea ).

1986–2003 he held a teaching position for French horn at the Musikhochschule Winterthur Zurich . His alphorn courses were very popular not only in Switzerland, but also in Germany , Austria and Russia. He devoted himself more and more to teaching the alpine and french horn, as well as the cornet and trumpet .

Since 2006 he has performed more and more as an alphorn soloist, so he premiered two alphorn concerts by Russian composers in Minsk (Belarus). He was also allowed to perform the piece Mercenary Fantasy by Carl Rütti, composed especially for him, in Russia. He also gave a master class to 40 horn players . In October 2007 he gave a recital with the Lucerne organist Martin Heini in the St. Petersburg Philharmonic as part of the Brass and Organ Festival . He took part in the 2009 Stelzenfestspiele near Reuth (Leipzig) as a course instructor and alphorn soloist with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra .

Alphorn impressions

Kofmehl's second album is entitled Alphorn Impressionen and was released on November 19, 2010. On the album he played compositions by Hans-Jürg Sommer and Carl Rütti. The two works Mit em Alphorn überere Pass (from Alphorn-Stubete 1) and Alp-Sommer by Hans-Jürg Sommer were recorded with the Nizioł Quartet . The pieces Kiental , SMS from the Alps (both by Hans-Jürg Sommer), Rämsel and Söldner-Fantasie (by Carl Rütti) were all for alphorn and organ and were played on this CD by Matthias Kofmehl and Carl Rütti.
