Matthias Mieses

Matthias Mieses (* 1885 in Przemyśl , Galicia , Austria-Hungary ; † 1945 on the march to the Gleiwitz concentration camp ), also in Polish: Mateusz; Hebrew: Matisyahu Mizes or Mizish, was a Polish philologist, comparative cultural historian, and journalist.

He came from a family of Jewish enlighteners ( Hebrew Maskilim ). There was a shtetl in Przemyśl . He studied culture and linguistics and published several works on Yiddish , the Jewish dialects, written languages ​​and Polish history .

His speech at the Conference for the Yiddish Language , also known as the Chernivtsi Conference, where he gave a defensive speech in favor of Yiddish, which received particular attention from Jizchok Leib Perez , became famous . He published his works in several languages.
