Matthias Schindler (born March 12, 1982 in Regensburg ) is a German paracycler . He starts in class C3.

Athletic career

Matthias Schindler is a police officer by profession . A medical examination in 2010 revealed a three-centimeter tumor on the spinal canal in his spine . He was operated on in February 2011. Because of damage to the nerves in the spinal cord, the operation resulted in incomplete paraplegia . After months of rehabilitation, he was able to leave the hospital. Both of his legs are numb from the hip down ("incomplete sensorimotor paraplegic syndrome"). He continues to work in the police force. He also gives lectures, gives personal coaching and takes a distance learning course to become a nutritionist .

At the end of 2012, Schindler contacted the Bavarian Disabled Sports Association and competed in his first national races in 2013. In 2014 he took part in the Paracycling Road World Championships in Greenville , USA , and also competed in world championships in the following two years. In 2017 he finished tenth in the individual time trial and in the same year he became German road race champion in Cologne . At the UCI Paracycling Road World Championships 2018 as well as at the UCI Paracycling Road World Championships 2019 , he won silver in the time trial.
