Matthias Sigismund Biechteler , also Matthias Sigismund Biechteler of Greiffenthal (* 1668 in Leibnitz (Styria) ; † 27. August 1743 ) was a composer and court conductor of the late Baroque .

Life

Biechteler studied at the Jesuit College in Graz from 1684 . In 1687 he became court musician with Prince Archbishop Johann Ernst von Thun and Hohenstein in Salzburg. In 1703 he was appointed Vice Kapellmeister in Salzburg, then in 1706 as Kapellmeister. Biechteler also remained court conductor under the prince archbishops Franz Anton von Harrach and Leopold Anton von Firmian . 1723 he was by Emperor Karl VI. raised to the nobility with the predicate "von Greiffenthal" . Under Biechteler's direction, Leopold Mozart was accepted into the Salzburg court orchestra. After Biechteler's death on August 27, 1743, Carl Heinrich Biber was his successor as court conductor.

His work, which has been handed down in the Salzburg Cathedral Archives, includes 19 masses, 4 requiums and various vocal music works as well as church sonatas and music for school dramas.
