Carl Heinrich Biber von Bibern (born September 4, 1681 in Salzburg ; † November 19, 1749 there ) was a late Baroque violinist and composer .

Life

Carl Heinrich Biber was the eighth of the eleven children of Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber and Maria Weiss. He received his musical training from his father, among others. In 1704 Biber made an art trip to Venice and Rome, which were important centers of music at the time. After his return he was employed as a violinist and valet, from 1714 he was vice conductor at the Salzburg court.

In 1743 Biber succeeded the late Hofkapellmeister Matthias Sigismund Biechteler (around 1668–1743) and was therefore the superior of Leopold Mozart . In 1746 he was raised to the rank of chief sitter . He belonged to a generation of composers who represented the stylistic change between the old generation, which was committed to the late Baroque style ideal, and the Rococo.

Kajetan Biber, presumably a son of Carl Heinrich Biber, was a violinist at the Salzburg court from 1756; he was mentioned in the Salzburg court calendar in 1787 as a violinist and valet at the Antekammera.

His work, which has been handed down in the Salzburg Cathedral Archives, includes 20 masses, 17 litanies and Vespers, 14 offertories, 3 magnificats, 3 te deen, 8 regina coeli, 3 miserere and other liturgical works. Biber's only known instrumental works are his 31 church sonatas. The latter are usually string sonatas with organ accompaniment (one of them with violino piccolo ); brass or woodwind instruments are seldom included. However, the works of the prolific writer Biber could not match the quality of the music of the brilliant father.
