Matthias Werner Hüser

Matthias Werner Hüser (* 1756 in Arnsberg ; † after 1830 ) was an Electoral Cologne official and archivist. In this position he remained in the Hessian and Prussian services. He was also the author of several historical writings.

Life

Hüser attended the Laurentianum grammar school . He then entered the state service in Electoral Cologne and worked under Maximilian Friedrich von Königsegg-Rothenfels in Münster in 1772 and in the government chancellery in the capital Bonn in 1773 . A short time later he switched to the government of the Duchy of Westphalia in Arnsberg as a chancellery . There he was given responsibility for the electoral archives in 1793 and, a short time later, the archives of the estates . The national archive was rearranged by Hüser and an extensive real register was created. In 1801 he was employed because of his successful work as a country archivist. After the duchy passed to Hessen-Darmstadt in 1802, he also took over the archives of the Wedinghausen monastery and those of other religious institutes in the region . The maintenance of the archives became Hüser's main task. He kept this area of responsibility even after Prussia took possession of the duchy in 1816. The new government released him from other tasks and employed him as an archivist. The release from other tasks gave Hüser time to turn to historical studies. Most of his works, except for the Arnsberg Chronicle, were not printed in their creation phase. In the past he was often confused with the mayor of Arnsberg, Anton Joseph Maria Hüser, because of the similarity of the name.
