Matthieu Bataille or Mathieu Bataille (born July 26, 1978 in Cucq ) is a former French judoka who has been an international referee since the end of his active career. He was European champion in 2005 and third in the world championship three times.

Athletic career

The 1.90 m tall Matthieu Bataille fought in the heavyweight division or in the open class. In 2001 he won a bronze medal in the heavyweight division at the Mediterranean Games in Tunis. In the following year he won the world championships for students in the open class. In 2003 he was French heavyweight champion. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, he was eliminated in his first fight against the Uzbek Abdullo Tangriyev after 4:17 minutes. In December 2004 the European Open Class Championships took place in Budapest. Bataille won the final against the Georgian Giorgi Kisilaschwili . A year later he won a bronze medal at the European Championships in the open class.

In 2007, Matthieu Bataille won his second French heavyweight title, defeating Teddy Riner in the final . In April 2007 Bataille won the European Police Championships. At the 2007 World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Bataille was defeated in the quarter-finals of the open class against the Japanese Yasuyuki Muneta , in the battle for a bronze medal he overcame the Brazilian Daniel Hernandes . At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Riner competed for France. Bataille took part in the 2008 World Championships in the open class and received a bronze medal after losing to Russian Alexander Mikhailin in the semifinals .

2010 Bataille entered the heavyweight world championships in Tokyo . After his semi-final defeat against the German Andreas Tölzer , he defeated the Brazilian Rafael Silva in the battle for bronze . In 2011 Bataille won again at the European Police Championships. In 2013 he ended his active judo career after finishing second at the European Open in Minsk.

Bataille has been an international referee since 2017. Among other things, he was at the 2018 and 2019 World Championships and the 2019 European Games .
