Matthijs Quispel (born November 21, 1805 in Numansdorp , † January 17, 1858 in Dordrecht ) was a Dutch landscape and animal painter.

Matthijs Quispel was born as the son of Arij Quispel and Lijsbeth Andeweg. He was a student of Martinus Schouman (1770-1848) and Gilles Smak Gregoor (1770-1843).

After graduating, he settled in Dordrecht as a freelance artist. He mostly painted landscapes with grazing cows and sheep. He spent the period from 1835 to 1836 on a study trip through Switzerland. then hiked along the Rhine , visited the Harz Mountains in 1838 .

After a stay in Belgium he visited Germany again in 1840.

He married Judick Scheepbouwer on December 12, 1838 in Dordrecht, with whom he traveled to Belgium and Germany. Their marriage had six children, two of whom came of age. He died four years after his wife's death in January 1858 at the age of 52.

He took part in exhibitions, in Amsterdam and The Hague 1828–1852, in Rotterdam 1836–1852 and in Groningen 1837–1847.
